Nieman Foundation to Honor McClatchy Bureau Chief Walcott With Journalistic Independence Honor

By: E&P Staff McClatchy Washington Bureau Chief John Walcott will be awarded the inaugural I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence on Tuesday, bestowed by The Nieman Foundation and Nieman Watchdog. The ceremony will be held at The Newseum in Washington, D.C.

Walcott, the first recipient of the award, is being recognized for leading the bureau in its tough coverage during the run-up to the war in Iraq. Barry Sussman of The Nieman Foundation called Walcott?s work ?outstanding, against-the-grain reporting? during a significant period in American journalism.

The award ceremony will be followed by a 90-minute workshop on covering the next presidential administration, moderated by Project for Excellence in Journalism director Tom Rosenstiel. Panelists include Walcott, Nieman Watchdog contributor Gilbert Cranberg, head of the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism: Florence Graves, founder of the Center for Public Integrity: Charles Lewis, Columbia Journalism Review contributing editor Michael Massing, and New Yorker writer and ?The Dark Side? author Jane Mayer.

The award presentation will be made at 2 pm at the Newseum's Knight Conference Center. The workshop will be held from 3:30 pm to 5 pm.
