Nine-Tower Goss Universal for Nigerian Publisher

By: E&P Staff The Punch (Nigeria) Ltd. has selected a Goss Universal 75 press to increase its overall print capacity and to expand business opportunities. The press will be installed late this year in a new plant 20 miles from the publisher's existing facility and will be one of the largest singlewidth presses in Africa.

Established in 1972 and headquartered in Ikeja, on the outskirts of Lagos, The Punch prints the country's leading daily tabloid newspaper.

"To ensure our daily title remains one of the highest circulation tabloids in the region, we must continue to invest in the future," Chief Ajibola Ogunshola, chairman of The Punch, said in a statement. "By utilizing the flexibility of this latest investment we also intend to look at new business opportunities as well as satisfy the demand from our customers for higher pagination."

The Universal 75 is the latest Goss press to be purchased by The Punch. Following installation in 1999 of a Community press with one tower and four mono units, the Punch extended that press each year up to 2005, resulting in a configuration of eight towers and two folders.

The shaftless Universal will consist of nine towers, 12 reelstands and one J2:3:3 jaw folder. It will feature a QuadTech color-register control and a Goss OPCS control system with four desks. The contract also calls for Goss to supply a conveyor and stacker system.

Ademola Osinubi, managing director and editor in chief at The Punch, called the press' singlewidth two-plate-around format "a perfect platform from which we can grow the business. In straight production the press will deliver a maximum tabloid product of 96-pages, of which 64 will be in full color. We have also made provision for a second folder to be added in the future".

More than 140 new Goss singlewidth printing units have been sold in Nigeria in the last 10 years, according to Paul Feeney, Goss International area sales manager.
