NJ Gov. To Revise FOI Restrictions

By: (AP) Gov. James McGreevey will revise an order that exempted hundreds of records, including some from the governor's office, from New Jersey's new public records law, administration officials said Monday.

McGreevey on Tuesday will reverse restrictions to the public records law that included more than 400 state government department exemptions and clarify how the law should work, officials said.

Media representatives have met with administration officials for several weeks seeking a revised directive.

The state's new public records law took effect July 8, revising a 38-year old law considered to be among the most restrictive in the nation. The new law presumes that all government records are public unless otherwise indicated.

Citing safety and security concerns, McGreevey signed an order the next day with hundreds of exemptions.

The majority were exemptions recommended by departments in state government. They include charter school applications, building permits, and applications for farmland acquisitions.
