No AP-Bashing for Nebraska Editor: Extols Virtues of Exchange

By: E&P Staff Despite the amount of newspapers expressing their discontent with The Associated Press these days, one Nebraska editor is making it known that he?s pretty happy with the news cooperative.

In an Oct. 22 column, Norfolk (Neb.) Daily News Editor Kent Warneke praised improvements to AP Exchange, the AP?s Web portal for local, national, and global content supplied to its member newspapers. The Daily News is a family-owned paper with a circ of approximately 16,000.

Warneke pointed out in the column that that before AP Exchange, newspapers like the Daily News would subscribe to specific services offered by the AP for a fee; previously, the Daily News subscribed to the national, world report, Nebraska report and photo services. But if ?a Northeast Nebraskan happened to be featured in an AP story or photograph in Iowa or South Dakota that made its way onto those individual state reports ? but not the national report ? the Daily News would have no access to it. Now, that?s all changing.

?The site allows the Daily News to create specific saved searches that will make staff members aware when someone from a Northeast or North Central Nebraska community is making news elsewhere in the nation or world,? Warneke added in the column.

?The presence of Nucor Steel and Vulcraft in Norfolk makes many Northeast Nebraskans more interested in developments in the steel industry than would be the case for a city where there is no steel company located,? Warneke wrote. ?Now we can have access to that information.?

Warneke also serves as president of the Nebraska AP Association.
