By: E&P Staff The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences on Tuesday announced the 2005 Webby Award nominees for Best Newspaper Site. This is the first year there has been a category for newspapers.

The nominees were the Web sites of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Variety, The Washington Post, and The Guardian of London.

"The nominees in the newspaper category for The Ninth Annual Webby Awards represent the skill, ingenuity, and vision of their creators -- and the best online today," Tiffany Shlain, creative director and founder of the Webbys, said in a statement.

The members of "the Academy," as it calls itself, include David Bowie, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, and Oracle chairman Larry Ellison. They will vote to select a winner.

The public can select a favorite at the Webby Awards' People's Voice site beginning April 29.

The winners will be announced May 3 and honored in New York on June 6, where acceptance speeches are limited to five words or less.
