'Non Sequitur' Comics Draw Strong Reaction

Posted
By: Dave Astor Today's "Non Sequitur" comic satirizing what cartoonist Wiley Miller calls the "media-driven non-issue" of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's remarks got strong reader reaction.

Meanwhile, the Friday "Non Sequitur" episode spoofed the dilemma of newspapers giving away content for free on their Web sites.

Today's comic shows an employer interviewing a job applicant and saying: "Well, you seem right for the job, but there's something your pastor said seven years ago that bothers me. Let me read it to you out of context...."

The caption: "If we hired like we vote."

Miller, when contacted by E&P, reports that he's received about an equal number of pro and con e-mails so far. The cartoonist adds that, until today, his most conservative readers had been "awfully quiet for quite a while."

He says: "A few years ago, any cartoon that just had even a hint of criticism toward right-wing dogma and the Bush administration would result in a flood of hate mail. In the last couple of years, even the most direct shots have yielded almost nothing in response.

"But for some reason, this rather mild satire of a media-driven non-issue has gotten some of them stirred up. Odd how they don't apply the same standards to John McCain and his radical pastors whom he sought out for endorsements. By those standards, they must also believe John McCain believes the Catholic Church is a 'great whore' and that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for a planned gay parade in New Orleans."

Friday's comic showed a newsstand with a sign saying: "Today in the Times: Print media isn't dead! Go to our Web site for the whole story."

Did Universal Press Syndicate -- which distributes "Non Sequitur" to more than 700 newspapers -- get any newspaper reaction to that comic? "We had one editor request a signed print," replies Kathie Kerr, Universal's assistant vice president for communications.
