By: Mark Fitzgerald Now that calm is returning to the capital city of Monrovia, the Liberia Institute of Journalism (LIJ) is trying to replace the computers, broadcast studio, and other equipment stolen or destroyed during the civil war, LIJ Executive Director Vinnie Hodges said in an e-mail last week.
The LIJ was looted and vandalized of everything it owned, Hodges wrote. The equipment to train Liberian journalists was originally provided by such Western groups as the Freedom Forum and the National Endowment for Democracy.
Now, Hodges wrote, LIJ is seeking funds that "will enable us to buy back our own computers ... that are being sold on the streets." LIJ, which produces an Internet newsletter of West African news, has a Web site at
