By: E&P Staff Colombian financial daily La Republica has invested in a new Goss Community SSC press to improve color quality and capacity. Due to be installed later this year, it will be housed in a new building at the company's Bogota facility.
La Republica is part of El Colombiano media group, which has a number of Goss presses installed at its sites. The new press will be used to print the 75,000-circulation daily La Republica and a range of semi-commercial inserts of varying distribution for a variety of customers, including government offices, associations, schools, transport agencies, and religious groups. The Community also will print a range of the group's newspapers.
According to La Republica Vice General Manager Juan Carlos Hernandez, the current two daily runs produce a 42-page broadsheet with 12 pages in full color. The new 35,000-copy-per-hour press will boost color capacity by 70% and cut production time.
La Republica's Community SSC will have four four-high towers, five reelstands and a folder with an upper former. The press also includes pneumatic brakes for faster response to web-tension changes, helping reduce waste.
Goss International also sold a Sunday 2000 web press to Valassis for a September installation at its Anderson Printing Division (APD), Livonia, Mich. The 24-page gapless press will print up to 77,600 impressions per hour and will be used primarily for versioned runs for the company's shared-mail products.
The Sunday 2000 technology will provide the desired combination high productivity capability "to excel in a makeready-intensive environment," APD Senior Vice President Aaron Trager said in a statement.
The four-unit Sunday press will be equipped with a Goss Contiweb CS splicer, Ecocool dryer with integrated chill rolls, PFF-3 pinless folder, semi-automatic Quick Plate Loading technology and Omnicon controls. Valassis employees will attend operator, mechanical and electrical training programs at the Goss International Training Center in New Hampshire.
A 2x6 format will allow the Sunday press at Valassis to produce up to three separate four-page products. Gapless blanket technology and pinless folding factored into the press selection, according to Trager, who said one or more makereadies will be complted hourly print versioned products.
