North Carolina Press Association Elects New President, Other Officers

CHAPEL HILL - Members of the North Carolina Press Association elected Rachel Hoskins as its president
for 2011-12 during the 138th annual meeting of the organization on Feb. 17.

Hoskins is the publisher of The Franklin Press and regional publisher for five Community Newspapers Inc.-
owned publications in North Carolina.

Her term as president of NCPA and North Carolina Press Services begins Aug. 1. She is currently the vice
president of the association and has previously served as a director for the organization. She has been
publisher at Franklin since 2006.

Hal Tanner III was elected as the incoming vice president. He currently serves as secretary-treasurer of NCPS.
He is the publisher of The Goldsboro News-Argus where he previously was the general manager for 10 years.
During the annual meeting, the membership also elected the following to the board of directors for three-year
terms:

- Scott McLeod, owner and editor of The Smoky Mountain News in Waynesville.
- Terry Coomes, vice president sales & marketing for the Winston-Salem Journal.
- Rick Bean, publisher of The Herald-Sun in Durham.

The board of directors approved the appointment of Les High as secretary-treasurer of NCPS, beginning Aug.
1. High is the editor of The News Reporter of Whitesville. He is currently a board member. Reappointed as
secretary-treasurer of NCPA was Regina Howard-Glaspie. She is the circulation director of the News &
Record
of Greensboro.

New appointments to fill vacant director seats were approved at the board meeting on Feb. 16. Selected to
serve were:

- M. Joseph Craig, group publisher for Heartland Communications and the publisher of The Robesonian at
Lumberton. (two-year term)
- Richard Rinehart, regional senior vice president of operations and strategic planning for The News &
Observer
and The Charlotte Observer. (one-year term)

During the annual meetings of the Associated Dailies of North Carolina and the North Carolina Association of
Community Newspapers, elections were conducted for each organization's president. Julie Moreno, publisher
of The Gaston Gazette, was elected to head the Associated Dailies. Tammy Dunn, editor/general manager of
Montgomery Herald was chosen as president of the Association of Community Newspapers.

NCPA is one of the oldest newspaper advocacy organizations in the nation. Founded in 1873, it lobbies for
newspapers and open government, provides free right-to-know legal advice and access brochures to
newspapers and their readers, offers professional development opportunities for members and administers one
of the largest editorial contests in the nation.
