By: E&P Staff Northwestern University on Tuesday launched a new master's degree track designed for experienced media professionals who will be able to select courses from the Medill School of Journalism's journalism and integrated marketing communication (IMC) programs, as well as from the media management major course offerings the Kellogg School of Management.
Northwestern's announcement used the example of a student who could choose interactive and multimedia classes from Medill's journalism program; consumer insight, database analysis, marketing finance and e-commerce classes from Medill's IMC program; and classes in media, sports and Internet marketing from Kellogg.
"This track is for experienced media professional who want to build new careers and enterprises," said Medill Dean John Lavine.
While it is true that traditional media business "are under severe stress, " Lavine added that "others, both traditional and new, are creating exciting new digital enterprises that offer content that enables the public to be better informed than ever before."
The new master's degree comes at time when the Kellogg business school's Media Management Center (MMC) is "repositioning and restructuring itself to ensure relevance to domestic and global media companies and to Northwestern University students," said its executive director, Michael P. Smith.
Smith said the upheavals in media are having an effect on the center: "Recently, the economic crisis faced by most domestic media has forced many companies to curtail or suspend executive education and research." He added that "global interest in media management is growing and technological advances promise substantial growth when the economy recovers."
