By: A weekly newspaper in Marin County will cease publication after 86 years in the business.
The Novato Advance announced Wednesday that it will publish its last issue on September 24, citing reduced advertising revenues and increased expenses as reasons for its closure.
The paper, which has 8,700 paid subscribers and employs 17 people, has not been profitable since 1999.
The paper's publisher Paul Hutheson says the community will suffer without its own weekly and the newspaper's demise is a sign of the economic times.
The newspaper is owned by Scripps Enterprises, a privately held company in Charlottesville, Virginia. The company had tried to find a potential buyer, but no one expressed interest.
