By: E&P Staff Journal Communications Inc., publisher of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, said Wednesday its total revenues from publishing and broadcast fell 13.4% to $40 million for the eleventh period ended Nov. 19.
The decrease was largely due to a $5.8 million drop in political and issue advertising in its broadcast group.
Revenues from the Journal Sentinel and community papers were down more modestly, falling 5.9% to $21.62 million. Ad revenue from continuing operations was $16.44 million, down 5.7% from the year-ago period.
At the Journal Sentinel, total advertising revenue was $13.67 million, down 4.7% compared to $14.34 million a year ago.
Retail advertising was up 1.9% -- but classified advertising revenue slumped 15.5%, with big declines in help-wanted and real estate. Help-wanted classified revenue fell 24.7%, while real estate was down 30.1%.
One bright spot was automotive, which was up 35.7% for the period.
Direct marketing revenue also increased, up 4.8% to $610,000.
Journal Sentinel circulation revenue slipped 2.1% to $3.9 million.
Total interactive advertising revenue at the daily newspaper, which is included in various ad revenue categories, increased 38.8% to $1.19 million for the period.
At Journal Communications community newspapers and shoppers, total advertising revenue from continuing operations fell 10.6% to $2.77 million, largely on declines in retail advertising revenue, which was down 7.1%, and classified, which plummeted 21.4%.
Circulation revenue fell 53.6%,mostly on a decision to change to a free-distribution model for Milwaukee-area community papers.
At Journal Communication's broadcasting segment, total revenue decreased 20.8% to $18.38 million.
