November Trial Date for Student Who Drove Halberstam to Death

By: A November trial date has been set for a Berkeley graduate student charged in the death of Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Halberstam.

Kevin Jones is free on his own recognizance after pleading not guilty yesterday to a charge of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.

Because the 26-year-old Jones is charged with a misdemeanor, he was not required to appear in court.

The not guilty plea was entered by his attorney.

The 73-year-old Halberstam was a passenger in a car driven by Jones when it was broadsided by another car in Menlo Park in April.

Prosecutors contend Jones ran a red turn arrow and drove into oncoming traffic.

Jones was driving the author to an interview with football legend YA Tittle at the time of the crash.

Halberstam died almost instantly when a broken rib punctured his lung.
