NOW Up in Arms Over 'Sexist' Cartoon in 'Daily News'

By: E&P Staff An unflattering cartoon of New York Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has drawn criticism from the New York State Chapter of the National Organization for Women.

The subject of NOW's complaint was a cartoon drawn by New York Daily News staff cartoonist Bill Bramhall and published in the July 14 edition.

The cartoon depicts Gillibrand with her mouth open, about to speak. To her left, the chairman says, "The chair recognizes the junior senator from New York, and asks the Sergeant-At-Arms to stand at alert." In the foreground, hands reach into boxes of corks, socks and gags, and a hook protrudes from out of frame to stop Gillibrand speaking.

"Bramhall?s phallic symbols send a clear message that women are good for only one thing," said NOW-NYS President Marcia Pappas. "And the disrespectful cartoon certainly touches on concerns feminists have had for centuries. What contributes to violence against women is the general attitude about women in general."

"The cartoon is about a politician with diarrhea of the mouth, not about her gender," Bramhall told Rob Tornoe of Turnoe's Cartoon News Web site.

Gillibrand had unknowingly gone over her allotted time in her introduction of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor to the Senate Judiciary Comittee Monday, and was told by Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT), "We?re going to have to put your full statement in the record so that Judge Sotomayor can be heard."
