Philadelphia Daily News columnist who has raised more than $150,000 for disabled children received the Will Rogers Humanitarian Award at this weekend's National Society of Newspaper Columnists (NSNC) conference in Tucson, Ariz.
Stu Bykofsky, a columnist since 1987, was recognized for his role in hosting an annual Variety Club fundraiser and other community-service activities in Philadelphia -- including efforts on behalf of animals, a youth center, an adoption center, multiple sclerosis, juvenile diabetes, and the city's mural-arts program.
The award -- which the NSNC sponsors with the Will Rogers Memorial Commission of Oklahoma -- is named for the humorist and newspaper columnist. His grandson, Kem Rogers, made the presentation at a dinner which also honored
60 Minutes commentator and Tribune Media Services columnist Andy Rooney, recipient of the 2003 Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award (
Syndicate World, May 15).
Also, the NSNC named Michael Kelly -- the Washington Post Writers Group columnist who died in Iraq this April -- Columnist of the Year (
Syndicate World, May 1). The posthumous award was accepted by his mother, Marguerite Kelly, also a syndicated columnist.
And the NSNC announced the winners of its 2003 column-writing contest. First-place honors went to Jeffrey Zaslow of
The Wall Street Journal (general interest, 100,000-plus-circulation newspapers); W. Bruce Cameron of the Denver
Rocky Mountain News and Creators Syndicate (humor, 100,000-plus circulation); Karin Vingle of the Charleston, W.Va.,
Sunday Gazette-Mail (general interest, under-100,000 circulation); John P. Young of the
Waco (Texas)
Tribune-Herald (humor, under-100,000 circulation); Tim Goodman of the
San Francisco Chronicle (Herb Caen Memorial Notes/Items category); and Mark Morford of SFGate.com (online column).
