By: (AP) Gossip columnist Lloyd Grove has left the Beltway for the Big Apple, where his new column for the
Daily News, called "Lowdown," has made its debut.
Grove, 48, who worked for
The Washington Post for more than 20 years and wrote its "Reliable Source" column, joins New York City's crowded field of gossip columnists.
The
Daily News already features the husband-and-wife gossip team of George Rush and Joanna Molloy. Grove faces competition from
New York Post columnists Richard Johnson and Cindy Adams, and
Newsday's Liz Smith, whose column is syndicated.
In his debut "Lowdown" column on Monday, Grove wrote about California gubernatorial candidate Arianna Huffington, Kevin Bacon, Russell Simmons, and President Bush's 72-year-old uncle, Jonathan J. Bush, who presents "flatulation devices" as gag gifts to friends and relatives.
Grove's column will appear Monday through Thursday, and on Sundays. Rush & Molloy will appear Tuesday through Friday, and on Sundays.
Grove said in a telephone interview that compared with Washington, the gossip in New York is more wide-ranging and more interesting.
"It's crazy," he said. "You have to do it a step at a time, a column at a time. ... I'm not expecting that the column tomorrow is going to be as authoritative or as good as the column a year from now."
Grove was first approached by
Daily News co-publisher Mort Zuckerman at an Oscar party last spring. "What I like about him is that his reporting about people is fair-minded, accurate, and not mean-spirited," Zuckerman told
The New York Times.
Grove grew up in Los Angeles and Greenwich, Conn., and has a degree in English from Yale University. He's worked stints in Texas at the
Corpus Christi Caller-Times and
The Dallas Morning News, where he wrote profiles.
He went to
The Washington Post in 1980, where he worked as a feature writer, theater critic, campaign reporter, and Style section reporter before taking on the
Post's "Reliable Source" gossip column.
