NY 'Daily News' Scribe Wins Prize for Reporting on Presidency

By: E&P Staff Thomas M. DeFrank, the Washington Bureau Chief for the New York Daily News, was awarded the Gerald R. Ford Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency on Monday. DeFrank received the award from Vice President Dick Cheney at a National Press Club luncheon.

DeFrank has covered the presidency since Richard Nixon was in office. His work for the Daily News was praised by the Ford Foundation for being "consistently accurate, balanced in judgment, and usually ahead of his competitors."

Specific articles that were cited for excellence included a piece on George W. Bush's chastisement of Karl Rove during the Valerie Plame scandal in 2003, an article surveying Bush?s weakening temper, and a story detailing the troubled relationship of Bush and Cheney.

The Gerald R. Ford Foundation?s Presidency prize is awarded to journalists whose accurate and substantial reports help to further educate the public on matters concerning the presidency.
