Daily News suspended publication Monday of its free evening edition, the
Daily News Express, citing difficulties distributing the paper following the terrorist attacks, which closed the Holland Tunnel.
Ken Frydman, a newspaper spokesman, also cited safety concerns for the hawkers who distributed the paper at major transportation hubs such as Penn Station and the Staten Island Ferry terminal in southern Manhattan.
Frydman declined to say when or if the edition would resume publication. He said some employees would be retained, but he declined to say how many or how many others would be laid off.
The
Daily News Express began publishing one year ago, becoming the first citywide evening newspaper in New York in more than a decade. The edition made its debut two weeks after its crosstown rival, the
New York Post, cut its newsstand price in half to 25 cents.
