N.Y. 'Daily News' to Publish Sunday Glossy

By: Jennifer Saba The battle over who can sell the most Sunday papers in New York just got a little more intense.

Over the past several months, the New York Post has been overhauling its Sunday edition. And now its archrival, the Daily News, announced the launch of "25 Hours," a Sunday magazine slated to debut on Oct. 3.

The magazine promises to cover the "hottest events in and around New York City" in color, with a focus on celebrity, society, and photos. The paper hired Jayne Gould to head up the new glossy. Gould made her mark at the Tatler in London before working with Associated Newspapers in London where she started the Sunday magazine "YOU" for The Daily Mail. She even worked at the New York Post, where she assisted in the transfer to color presses, while establishing new fashion, Oscar, and movie sections.

"I love New York City and I love the people who live here. New Yorkers deserve a smart magazine that will excite them, inform them, and invigorate them. That's what I intend to do with '25 Hours,'" said Gould in a statement.

The concept has been in the works for seven months under the eye of editorial director Martin Dunn, who said the magazine will run up to 64 pages. It will make its debut along with Life magazine, which will start running in the News the same week.

Dunn is "very confident" that it will help raise circulation based on the paper's previous experience when it published a "Friends" souvenir magazine on the Sunday before the season finale. "It was a significant increase," he said, though he won't say how much.

On another note, the paper is planning to launch a free Hispanic paper, Hora Hispana, to be distributed to 200,000 Spanish-speaking households on Thursdays.
