'NY POST' FIRES COLUMNISTS, EDITORS

Less than two months after arriving at the New York Post,
Editor Col Allan made his mark with a round of high-profile
firings Friday that included veteran liberal columnist Jack
Newfield, and two senior editors, Marc Kalech and Stuart Marques,
sources said.

Allan, who replaced former editor Xana Antunes when he took the
job in April, also dismissed Associate Metro Editor Lisa Baird,
City Editor Jerry Schmetterer, and Features Columnist Michael
Lewittes, sources confirmed.

"I'm saddened by it because I was writing a very popular column,"
said Lewittes, 34, who had served as weekend features editor
prior to taking on the column last fall. "I received thousands of
letters from people who said I made them laugh."

Since Allan became editor, staffers have been unsure about what
moves he would make, with many saying he had limited contact with
reporter and editors. "He just stayed in his office," one
newsroom veteran told E&P Online. "He was hard to get to know."

Allan joined the Post following a successful stint at
The Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph in Sydney,
Australia, which are owned by the Post's parent News Corp.
Sources at the Post said rumors are already circulating
that Allan plans to reach back to his Sydney connections to
replace some of those who were just fired.
