By: Joe Strupp It is not a surprise that the New York Post would endorse John McCain for president. But doing so nearly two months before Election Day is a bit unusual.
Still, the News Corporation daily boasted about its endorsement on Page One Monday, with a lengthy backing inside that said: "McCain's lifelong record of service to America, his battle-tested courage, unshakeable devotion to principle and clear grasp of the dangers and opportunities now facing the nation stand in dramatic contrast to the tissue-paper-thin r?sum? of his Democratic opponent, freshman Sen. Barack Obama...."
The endorsement does offer praise for Obama's success, however, stating: "None of this implies an iota of disrespect toward Obama. It took a formidable candidacy to defeat Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton - a candidacy, by the way, which we strongly supported earlier this year.
"And the intelligence, the organizational skills and the ability to communicate that Obama demonstrated from the beginning dramatically underscore the history that is being made by the first African-American to head a major-party presidential ticket. He should be around for a long time, and we hope that he is."
When asked why the paper chose to offer its support so early in the general election, Editorial Page Editor Robert McManus told E&P : "it speaks for itself."

As it has in the past, E&P will keep a running list of endorsements for McCain and Obama.
