By: E&P Staff The Times Union in Albany, N.Y., today ran a profile of Hy Rosen, who was editorial cartoonist for the newspaper from 1945 to 1989.
Rosen recalled that during his early years at the Hearst-owned paper, he had to draw cartoons based on the publisher's stance on issues. He said this resulted in dry, less creative cartoons.
"Freedom is the lifeblood, especially for a cartoonist," Rosen told Times Union staff writer David Filkins. "The work is more interesting and comes out better. ... Being told what to draw is suicide for a cartoonist."
Rosen estimated that he has drawn more than 10,000 editorial cartoons during his career.
The 84-year-old Rosen was one of three founding Association of American Editorial Cartoonists members who attended the AAEC's 50th-anniversary convention last month in Washington, D.C.
