By: (AP) CNN has reached an agreement with
The New York Times and
The Boston Globe to make the newspapers' reporters available for stories on the impending war with Iraq.
The reporters will deliver their reports on-screen with the newspapers' logos visible.
"This would be sort of a dream team in the sense that you have two serious, widely respected, world-renowned news organizations that will provide, I think, unrivaled coverage of this conflict," Eason Jordan, CNN's chief news executive, said on Monday. CNN has an existing relationship with
Time magazine that will remain in effect.
MSNBC has similar arrangements in place with
The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post Co.'s
Newsweek.
Fox News Channel did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
The deal was attractive to the newspapers because it gives an additional audience for its reporting, said Toby Usnik, spokesman for the New York Times Co., which also owns the
Globe.
CNN is also providing the newspapers with additional technical help overseas, so their reporters can appear on PBS' "NewsHour" and the new Discovery Times cable channel.
In a fast-moving conflict, there's a possibility that the newspaper reporters could deliver information on television faster than they had the chance to write it for their newspaper. But Usnik said the reporters, who can offer up-to-the-minute reports on their Web sites, will make the newspapers their first priority.
Last month, Cox Newspapers Inc. of Atlanta agreed to give some of its assigned reporting slots with U.S. troops to CNN in return for newspaper stories from CNN correspondents.
