NY TIMES EXTENDS WIRELESS REACH

The New York Times aims to extend its North American reach
through agreements with leading wireless telecommunications
providers in the United States and Canada. The newspaper
company's new-media division, New York Times Digital, announced
Wednesday that news will be provided to customers of Nextel
Communications Inc. of Reston, Va., and Bell Mobility Inc. of
Toronto.



Subscribers to Nextel's wireless Internet service and Bell
Mobility's digital phones will now have access to NYTimes.com
content, including top stories, international news, technology
news, movie reviews, and sports info. The content is being
distributed via the wireless application protocol (WAP).



Nextel said it serves 174 of top 200 markets in the U.S., while
Bell Mobility claims 2.8 million Canadian customers.



The Times already supplied content to wireless devices
through partnerships with AvantGo, SkyTel, OmniSky, Vindigo, and
the Palm VII.



Globe and Mail launches its own mobile service



Meanwhile, The Globe and Mail of Toronto partnered with
another Canadian telecom, Telus Corp. News from globeandmail.com
will be available for Telus clients with Web-ready phones.
