'NY Times' Hires OPA's Michael Zimbalist for New R&D Position

By: E&P Staff Michael Zimbalist, president of the Online Publisher's Association (OPA), has been named vice president, research and developments operations for the New York Times Company, a new position.

Zimbalist, who starts Jan. 23, will report to Martin Nisenholtz, senior vice president for digital operations.

"Creating a research & development operation is a critical part of our corporate strategy and we are very pleased to announce our R&D group with the appointment of Michael as its new head," Nisenholtz said in a statement. "Michael is recognized as an online media expert and he brings extensive experience in formulating strategy for online and new media entities. He will help create a vibrant, long-term innovation capability for the Times Company."

Zimbalist will be set loose on developing a "long-term innovation capability for the company," according to the office release. "As an extension of the development aspect of this group, he will also lead Boston.com into its next phase of growth and oversee mobile technology initiatives for the Company."

A search is currently underway to find Zimbalist's replacement at OPA. In the meantime, Pam Horan, OPA's current vice president of marketing and membership, will take over as interim executive director.

The 49-year-old Zimbalist joined the OPA in 2001 as acting executive director and advanced to executive director and then president in 2004. Previously he was executive vice president of marketing and business development at ePod Corporation from 1999 to 2001. He has also held management positions at United Media, Capital Cities/ABC, and AT&T Downtown Digital.

Zimbalist received a B.A. degree in chemistry and philosophy from Brown University in 1979.
