By: E&P Staff The New York Times reports today that it may temporarily print The Wall Street Journal -- the same New York metro edition the Journal plans as a head-to-head competitor with the Times, including political and cultural coverage. The Journal plans to debut its New York section in spring.
News Corp. production executives could not be reached immediately for comment. Dow Jones Communications Vice President Robert Christie declined to comment.
To overcome delays in preparing New York Post plant to take over journal printing from the old Dow Jones plant in South Brunswick, N.J., Post and Journal parent News Corp. has sought other print sites, including the Post's rival tabloid, the Daily News, which was said to have turned down the job.
The Post has engaged England's Printing Press Services International for additional press work and Honeywell to upgrade press controls to manage production of the two newspapers. The Daily News last month started up its own new equipment -- full-color KBA Commander CT presses -- at its Jersey City, N.J., plant.
Unnamed sources at News Corp. and elsewhere told Times reporter Richard Perez-Pena that the Post project has been repeatedly delayed, and that to keep to its publishing schedule News Corp. is looking to contract out daily printing of up to 125,000 copies through April.
The Times' plant in New York's Queens borough remains among News Corp.'s outsourcing options. Perez-Pena quotes Times President Scott Heekin-Canedy saying, "We are in discussions with News Corp. to allow them to make use of our presses" and calling it "an advantageous business transaction and nothing more."
