New York Times Senior Business Correspondent Micheline “Micki” Maynard, the Gray Lady’s resident expert on planes, trains and automobiles, is leaving become editor of the new Chicago-based Upper Midwest Local Journalism Center and its new editorial initiative “Changing Gears,” according to a report by mediaite.com.
Maynard will be the senior broadcast editor for the Center, which is funded in collaboration with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and National Public Radio. There, she will hire and direct the staff of the "Changing Gears" project. “We will be producing original programs that will look at ways to reinvent the Rust Belt,” she wrote to colleagues. “Our reports will focus on a number of key areas, including the environment, education, jobs, and culture.”
In a staff memo addressing the move, NYT Business Editor Larry Ingrassia wrote that Maynard “emphasizes how much she has loved her time at The Times, but adds that this is an opportunity to do something new that she felt she couldn’t pass up.”
