'NY Times' Mag's Vision Of Twin Towers Site

Posted
By: Joe Strupp The New York Times Magazine will present its own vision for the future of the former World Trade Center site in its Sept. 8 edition, which will be almost entirely devoted to the first anniversary of last year's terrorist attacks.

"There was a sense that maybe enough people weren't being asked for their ideas about this," magazine Editorial Director Gerald Marzorati said about the approach. "I think we are just adding to the discourse because people want a say."

The Sept. 8 edition will be divided into two sections, both focused on the former Twin Towers location, Marzorati said. The first part will be a 10,000-word article on the buildings' history and the aftermath of the attacks. "It will be a historical piece about the World Trade Center and how the decisions about where and how to build it would have an impact in the hours after the planes struck," Marzorati said, offering few specifics. "That's about all I want to say on it."

The second part will present an overall plan for the site and most of lower Manhattan, with input from a number of planners, architects, and designers, Marzorati explained. "They envision a more audacious way to rebuild the site" than has been presented previously.

The magazine's plans come weeks after a series of options to rebuild the site have been presented by city officials, which have drawn mixed reactions.

Marzorati credited Times architecture critic Herbert Muschamp with the idea for the issue. He said a listing of architects who advised on this issue printed last week in the New York Observer may not have been completely accurate.
