By: E&P Staff It seemed for a moment in this morning's editorial that The New York Times was about to come out for impeaching the president, especially in light of recent polls.
How else to explain this run-up: "After President Bush's disastrous visit to Latin America, it's unnerving to realize that his presidency still has more than three years to run. An administration with no agenda and no competence would be hard enough to live with on the domestic front. But the rest of the world simply can't afford an American government this bad for that long."
In the end, however, the Times pulled back, suggesting only that the president fire someone, anyone, even though the problem is "President Bush himself."
According to the Times, he can't dismiss the veep, despite Dick Cheney's current 19% approval rating. But he should do the next best thing, the Times advised, and do what other presidents have done to vice presidents: keep him "busy attending funerals."
