By: E&P Staff NYTimes.com won three medals and two awards for excellence from the Society for News Designers at the society's annual SNDies awards, presented at a dinner this weekend in San Jose, Calif.

The five awards for NYTimes.com made it the most honored American paper at the event. Only Spain's El Mundo topped it, with seven awards.

The SNDies are similar to the society's "Best of Newspaper Design" competition, recognizing excellence in journalistic design, graphics, and photography presented on a new-media platform.

NYTimes.com, the Web site of The New York Times, won a silver medal, features, for "Invention for 900 Hands: Bulding a Piano," and two bronze medals -- breaking news and non-breaking news -- for, respectively, "The California Recall" and "At Life's End: Oregon's Suicide Option." The site also won awards of excellence, non-breaking news, for "American Dreamers: The Lure of Las Vegas" and "Transition in Iraq."

USAToday.com won four awards, and Sun-Sentinel.com, based in Florida, won three.

The competition is sponsored by the Society for News Design and coordinated by the University of Denver's Estlow International Center for Journalism and New Media.
