'NY Times' Sunday Preview: Hollywood Was Right on the War

Posted
By: E&P Staff This Sunday's New York Times Magazine is a special issue devoted to ?Hollywood Goes to War? with pieces that feature George Clooney, Iraq documentaries, Henry Rollins' surprising USO tours and much else. One story by Matt Bai is sure to draw attention, as its subhed suggests, ?On Iraq, Hollywood liberals weren't so out of step with America after all.?

Feeling vindicated, Rob Reiner, the director/actor, declares, ?If we had just one house of Congress, this man [Bush] would be impeached.?

Bai notes that indeed ?these last months have given Hollywood's much-maligned activists some reason to gloat?.On Iraq, at least, Hollywood's self-righteous skepticism appears now not only to have been justified but also to have been precisely what Bush said it wasn't: a leading indicator of mainstream American opinion.?

For balance, Bai notes that the lefty stars did not exactly take to the streets but rather embraced Moveon.org. And he recalls a Democratic pollster saying that even a blind dog finds a bone now and then.

But Bai concludes: ?And yet it's also true that Hollywood quickly grasped realities about the war that Washington, for all its gravity and accumulated sagacity, did not.?
