The New York Times is adding a new section on Fridays called "Escapes" that will feature articles on travel, real estate, and cars, the company announced Monday.
The section, which will begin appearing April 5, is part of a national expansion at the newspaper that started in 1997. "Escapes" will be the first new section the newspaper has launched since the debut of "Circuits," a technology section, in 1998.
Earlier that week, the newspaper will also expand the reach of several existing sections of the paper which are currently only seen in New York and Northeast editions.
The "Living Arts" section that had appeared in national editions of the paper will be replaced by "The Arts" on Mondays through Thursdays, "Dining In/Dining Out" on Wednesdays, and "House & Home" on Thursdays.
The "Dining In/Dining Out" section will also carry more coverage of culinary issues including a new wine-tasting feature. The newspaper is also increasing its coverage of business travel on Tuesdays and commercial real estate on Wednesdays.
The Wall Street Journal, which competes with the
Times for national advertising dollars, launched a successful Friday section four years ago called "Weekend Journal," which also carries articles on travel and real estate.
The
Journal is also planning to announce a redesign of its front page April 9 along with a new section called "Personal Journal" that will also include articles on leisure and other personal pursuits.
The
Times and
Journal are both trying to woo national advertisers. Each newspaper is running ads announcing their new sections in trade publications such as
Adweek and
Mediaweek.
