'NY Times' to Launch Sports Magazine in 2006

By: E&P Staff The New York Times is planning to publish four issues of a new sports magazine in 2006.

The debut of PLAY: The New York Times Sports Magazine will be Feb. 5 on Super Bowl Sunday. Three additional issues are set to run in the fall.

Former Outside magazine editor Mark Bryant will edit PLAY, which will be distributed in Sunday editions of the newspaper.

"This is a magazine for people who prefer playing their sports to watching them," Bryant told the New York Post.

The paper plans a national distribution of more than 150,000 copies of PLAY outside New York. The content will also be available at NYTimes.com.

Last week the paper announced it was publishing a Holiday themed magazine in December.
