'NYT' Ads Up in May, Though New England Group Suffers

By: New York Times Co., parent of its namesake newspaper and other media holdings, on Thursday said May advertising revenue rose 4.4 percent companywide.

The company logged $184.6 million in advertising sales during the month, up from $176.8 million a year ago. Total company revenue increased 4 percent in May to $271.5 million from $261.1 million.

In the news media group, advertising revenue rose 5.6 percent at its New York Times group and 7.1 percent at its regional segment, while ad sales slipped 6.9 percent at its New England media unit. Combined, news media group ad revenue edged up 3.1 percent to $166.3 million.

"We saw strength across many categories, particularly in retail advertising at each of the news media groups," said Janet L. Robinson, president and chief executive, in a statement. "Other revenues grew at all of the properties in the news media group as a result of the introduction of new products and services, including TimesSelect."

The company's broadcast holdings posted a 6.6 percent rise in monthly advertising sales to $12.7 million. About.com, a news and information Web site, saw May ad sales surge 59 percent to $5.6 million.

So far this year, the company has reported $956.9 million in advertising revenue, up 2.7 percent from $931.6 million a year earlier. Total revenue has risen 2.6 percent to $1.43 billion from $1.39 billion in the same period last year.
