'NYT' Announces Shuttering of 'Boldface Names' Gossip Column

Posted
By: E&P Staff New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller announced Wednesday in a memo to staff that the paper would be ending its "Boldface Names" gossip column, which has appeared in the Metro section for five years. The final column will appear in Friday's paper.

In announcing the demise of "Boldface", Keller praised its writers and said that the column had been "entertaining, daring, and laugh-out-loud funny." He wrote that the column was more of a wide-angle view of the world than conventional gossip columns.

While the timing of the move seems curious, given the recent scandal at the New York Post's "Page Six," Keller asserted in his memo that the decision to end the column has been made earlier.

"For the record, Joe Sexton suggested, and we agreed, that Boldface had run its course several weeks ago, when the current author of the column, Campbell Robertson, began a romance with the Culture Department," wrote Keller.
