By: E&P Staff The New York Times business reporter accused of plagiarizing from several news sources including The Wall Street Journal and Reuters has resigned.
Zachery Kouwe officially left the Times after he was suspended by the paper on Tuesday. Last week Wall Street Journal managing editor Robert Thomson complained that Kouwe lifted passages from the Journal. On Monday, the Gray Lady published an editor's note about the situation.
In an
interview with New York Observer media reporter John Koblin, Kouwe said: "I was as surprised as anyone that this was occurring. I write essentially 7,000 words every week for the blog and for the paper and all that stuff. As soon as I saw, I guess, like six examples, I said to myself, 'Man what an idiot. What I was thinking?'"
Kouwe wrote for the New York Times popular blog Deal Book. Prior to joining the New York Times in 2008, Kouwe worked for the New York Post and Dow Jones newswire.
The New York Times itself covered Kouwe's resignation in an awkward staff-written
story that began: "A New York Times reporter accused of plagiarizing portions of several articles resigned from the newspaper on Tuesday, according to two people briefed on the matter."
