Strong advertising demand drove a 23% increase in second-quarter earnings
growth at the New York Times Co., handily beating analysts' estimates.

The Times Co. reported earnings per share of 59 cents, while a consensus
estimate of 15 analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial called for 55
cents.

Revenue for the quarter rose 13.6% to $885.5 million, thanks to a 17% gain in
advertising revenue and contributions from the recently acquired Telegram
& Gazette in Worcester, Mass.

Ad revenue rose 16.5% at The New York Times newspaper and
14.8% at The Boston Globe, fueled by strong national and help-

wanted advertising.

At New York Times Digital, revenue jumped to $13.5 million from $5 million
in the year-ago quarter. Operating losses mounted to $15.5 million from $4.6
million in the same period, due to higher staffing, promotion, and acquisition
costs, the company said.
