By: E&P Staff The New York Times is launching its latest "local" edition in Chicago on Friday in conjunction with the Chicago News Cooperative. The Chicago area report will appear on Fridays and Sundays in the New York Times.
The Chicago report will focus on local news, policy, sports and culture. James Warren, a former Chicago Tribune managing editor, will write a regular column.
The
Chicago News Cooperative was co-founded on Oct. 22 by former Los Angeles Times Editor Jim O'Shea, who also served as managing editor of the Chicago Tribune.
"This collaboration with the Chicago News Cooperative will allow us to expand our coverage of Chicago, supplementing our own work with sophisticated reporting by local journalists who have deep roots in the community," Bill Keller, the New York Times' executive editor, said in a statement.
The other journalists involved in the Chicago News Cooperative are former Chicago Tribune staffers Jessica Reaves and Bill Parker, David Greising and Jose M. More and Dan Mihalopoulous. Katie Fretland, formerly of the Omaha World-Herald, is also on staff.
O'Shea said in a statement: "We are delighted that America's premier newspaper has enough faith in our ideas to partner with us in producing quality political, educational and cultural coverage for our readers in Chicago."
The New York Times launched a
Bay Area "edition" in October that involves additional pages devoted to the area.
"Our intent is to roll out these expanded reports in several key markets around the country, working with local journalists and news organization in a collaborative way," Scott Heekin-Canedy, the New York Times' president and GM, said in a statement. "This approach is a service to our readers and will strengthen our subscriber retention."
