'NYT' Magazine Launches Essay Contest For College Students

Posted
By: E&P Staff The New York Times Magazine has announced a nationwide essay contest for college students. The winning essay will be published in the magazine?s college issue, due on newsstands on September 30.

The essay is to be based upon an article by author and historian Rick
Perlstein; the article can be found here.

Perlstein argues in his piece that today?s college campuses have relinquished their key role in society; they now tend to mirror the
"competitive, market-driven approach to life," rather than a "break from a young person?s past?with all the freedom and creativity that a fresh start implies."

Since college campuses are no longer the centers for engaged thought and interaction with the world at large, such as they were in the 1960s and 1970s, Perlstein writes that the institutions have lost their influence on the rest of society.

The deadline for the essays is Monday, August 6. The winning essay, to be selected by New York Times Magazine editors, will not only be published in the September 30 college issue, but will also be posted on NYTimes.com and mtvU.com, the Web site that accompanies the 24-hour MTV college television station. Additionally, mtvU will air a segment with the winner.
