By: E&P Staff The New York Times emerges today with a not real kind review of the new Rod Lurie film "Nothing But the Truth," which opened in New York and Los Angeles today for awards consideration and will open widely later. But most other reviews have been positive (see below).
Lurie and others are playing down the inspiration from the Judy Miller case (the reporter goes to jail but plot is quite different), yet the Times plays it up, with Manohla Dargis complaining at the start, "I really, really wanted to watch Kate Beckinsale, best known for wearing fangs and tight leather pants in the 'Underworld' vampire franchise, interpret Ms. Miller."
Here are excerpts from some other reviews:
Entertainment Weekly: "'Nothing But the Truth' has been made with brains, pace, and skill, and with a topical fury that puts it ahead of the curve on its real subject: the withering of freedom in a democracy gone apathetic."
The Hollywood Reporter: "The Rod Lurie film is a typically intelligent if occasionally overwritten political thriller, boasting a powerhouse cast headed by Kate Beckinsale, Vera Farmiga and Alan Alda."
Variety: "Lurie's avoidance of the pat, heart-tugging moments is admirable, and his writing of the cutting exchanges between Rachel and Erica is particularly good.
"Farmiga burns through her role as the loyal CIA agent scorned. Dillon applies a folksy veneer to his prosecutor's hardball game, and Alda is smooth as the most experienced player on the field."
Rolling Stone: "Lurie is expert at springing surprises and getting the best out of a first-rate cast. Beckinsale excels at finding the chinks in Rachel's armor. Farmiga goes so deep into her character you can feel her nerve endings. And Alda is simply superb as a lawyer whose peacock vanity about his designer wardrobe hardly prepares you for his moving argument for principles before the Supreme Court.
"Lurie also convinced Floyd Abrams, who represented Miller in court, to play the trial judge, and the canny counselor steals every scene he's in. 'Nothing But the Truth' is currently in distribution hell, which means you might have to seek it out. It's worth the trouble. Lurie has crafted a different kind of thriller, one with a mind and a heart."
