By: E&P Staff As if New Yorkers aren't loony enough about real estate, The New York Times is going to feed the beast by introducing a complete overhaul of its Real Estate section slated for this Sunday's paper.
It will make its debut with expanded coverage, color photos, charts and graphs as well as a zipped-up online version. Look for such columns called "The Hunt" (which will cover the process of buying) and "Big Deal" (an inside look at "who's buying what where, and who's doing what to whom"). For those poor souls who don't have a zillion dollars to go towards a mortgage, the Times will also provide a column called "For Rent."
"To obsess about real estate is a New York tradition, and with this expanded section, New Yorkers can satisfy their cravings to find the perfect homes and the best deals in the area," said Trish Hall, real estate editor, in a statement. "This section will be both a wish book and a practical guide; it will offer readers a glimpse into the hottest properties around town as well as provide practical information for people actively looking to buy or sell."
For sure, the Times is also hoping to attract advertisers with its revamped section. For the industry overall, real estate revenue is beginning to slow. In the case of the Times, its parent company reported that April classified advertising revenues for The New York Times Newspaper Group -- which includes the Times and International Herald Tribune -- was "offset by softness in real estate advertising."
