'NYT' Sunday Preview: Warren Beatty on His 'Friend' Ronald Reagan -- And Why HE Won't Run for Office

Posted
By: E&P Staff Interviewed by Deborah Solomon for the upcoming New York Times Sunday Magazine, actor/director/activist Warren Beatty declares, for once and for all, that he will never run for office in California, despite Democrats' pleas. "I am afraid I am not generous enough to do that with my life," he explains, citing the demands of his four children at home.

He adds: "Rather than run for public office, I would prefer to eat my own knee." Beatty gives his age as "142."

Much of the interview concerns the arrival of the first DVD version of his Oscar-winning 1981 film "Reds," the sympathethic look at Communist writer/activist John Reed, who died fairly young. Surprisingly, Beatty reveals that President Reagan was "a friend" and invited him to show the movie at the (strongly anti-Communist) White House.

What was Reagan's reaction? "He was very complimentary about the fact that I had produced it, written it, acted in it and directed it at the same time," Beatty reports. But Reagan also said: "I was kind of hoping for a happy ending."
