'NYT' to Distribute at Olympics

By: E&P Staff The New York Times is making a foothold in Athens, Greece, during the Summer Olympics by distributing its national edition every morning during the games. The paper has teamed up with Oce, a digital document management company based in The Netherlands, to digitally print the newspapers. The Times will be the only U.S.-based paper out of 13 participating in Oce print runs during the games, according to a statement.

"The New York Times is delighted to be working with Oce DNN to provide the paper in a timely fashion to readers in Athens during this great event," said March Z. Kramer, Times senior vice president, circulation, in a statement. "It is our privilege to be able to serve the athletes, their supporters, local readers and many visitors expected to be in Athens during the Olympic Games."

The papers are printed digitally in Athens Monday through Saturday. The Sunday edition, however, will be flown to Athens from the U.S. The run started Aug. 3 and will last through Aug. 31.

Oce teamed up with Delta Singular Outsourcing Services to print the Times along with other papers such as the Financial Times of London and the Asahi Shimbun from Japan. The Hellenic Distribution Agency delivers the papers throughout Athens and the Olympic Village.

Oce's digital newspaper project produces the Toronto-based Globe and Mail for London readers. Oce estimated that G&M readers in the UK can get the paper four hours sooner than Canadians.

This is not the first time digital distribution of newspapers occurred during the Olympics. PressPoint had a network of papers during the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The company announced it was going out of business during the games.
