The New York Times Co. said this week that over 20 employees were fired after sending offensive e-mails. The workers were based in the Times Co.'s Shared Services Center, a payroll and benefits center based in Norfolk, Va.

The company's president and CEO, Russell T. Lewis, sent a memo to all employees with news of the firings. The memo said the company doesn't routinely monitor e-mail, but does investigate when a violation of the company's e-mail policy is reported.
