The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund will begin accepting online
donations of up to $500 via an agreement with Wave Systems Corp. of
Lee, Mass. Wave's CharityWave.com allows the public to donate 100%
of their contributions to charities of their choice. There are no
transaction or administrative fees.
New York Times readers will be able to contribute to the Neediest
Cases fund or the newspaper's college scholarship program at http://www.nytimes.com/neediest, http://www.nytimes.com/scholarship
or at http://www.charitywave.com.
The 89-year-old Neediest Cases Fund raises money for New York City
social agencies. The Times Co. pays the fund's expenses. The
scholarship program awards scholarships of up to $12,000 a year
for four years to high school seniors in the city.
CharityWave.com was established by Wave Systems Corp. as a free and
secure online contribution service for various charities.
The Times isn't the only newspaper to offer online charity
contributions. The Dallas Morning News launched a nonprofit
Web-building site last October for nonprofits in the Dallas area.
The Dallas paper used KOZ.com's Community Publishing System to set
up the site, which allows charities to accept donations via DonorNet,
an online fundraising group based in Denver.
