By: E&P Staff The New York Times Co. has named NYTimes.com editor-in-chief Len Apcar Deputy Managing Editor for the International Herald Tribune's Asia desk.

In a memo to staff, top Times editors noted that Asia is the fastest growing part of The IHT's circulation, and would become a larger focus of the company going forward, both in print and online.

Apcar will take over the role of leading the IHT's Asia editorial, but the memo stated that he will also work closely with editors in New York to make sure the Hong Kong newsroom interacted closely with both the Times and the Herald Tribune as well as their Web sites.

The editors praised Apcar's online experience and said that by having him in Hong Kong, the paper was assured that correspondents around the world would have a top editor to talk stories over with at all hours of the day and night as news breaks.

"On his watch, the [Times] site has won just about every Web journalism award, sometimes three times. His new job will call on all his old journalism and new media skills," said the memo.

Apcar will begin at his new post next month, and then return to Paris to oversee the integration of the Herald Tribune's online and print operations.
