By: New York Times Digital has named Leonard Apcar, the
Times assistant editor of foreign news, as editor-in-chief of NYTimes.com. Apcar, 49, succeeds Bernard Gwertzman, 67, who is retiring after a 27-year career at the
Times.
Apcar assumes his new position June 10. He has served as foreign news assistant editor for four years.
New York Times Digital CEO Martin Nisenholtz praised the outgoing Gwertzman for helping "us achieve our position today" and for developing "an editorial team that is top-notch."
In a statement,
New York Times Executive Editor Howell Raines said Apcar "is a seasoned journalist whose editing and reporting skills are admired throughout our newsroom. He will build on the great contributions that Bernie Gwertzman made in establishing our Web site's reputation for quality journalism."
Apcar joined the
Times in 1991 as assistant business and financial editor. He previously worked for the
St. Petersburg (Fla.)
Times and
The Wall Street Journal.
Gwertzman joined the
Times in 1968, and held a number of positions including foreign editor.
