By: Only a few months after becoming a pay service, the News Tracker service at NYTimes.com now has 20,000 subscribers.
Launched in May 2002 as a free service, the News Tracker eventually had 500,000 users. News Tracker is a personalized feature that allows readers to select topics of interest to them. Whenever an article matching that topic is published at NYTimes.com, the user receives an e-mail notification.
The site switched to a paid subscription model in May 2003, charging an annual fee of $19.95.
