NYTimes.com Rolls Out Prototype Category on 'First Look' Blog

Posted
By: E&P Staff The New York Times is launching a new category within The First Look blog that previews technology projects in the works, in hopes of getting reader feedback and comments.

"This is part of our ongoing strategy to transform NYTimes.com into a more vibrant and Interactive news and information platform," Marc Frons, chief technology officer, digital operations at the New York Times Co., said in a statement.

The blog is featuring two new projects in the works, "Web Slices" and "Article Skimmer." Web Slices is geared around the launch of Internet Explorer 8 and involves live bookmarks with automatic updates -- check it out here.

Article Skimmer plays with the layout of stories that shows what is on deck by section on one page. It's like the interactive version of its index page in the printed edition.

"Posting about our newly launched products is nice, but introducing you to our applications before they hit the mainstream is even better," NYTime.com's Ken Little wrote in the first post in prototypes. "Prototype is a new category of the First Look blog, specially dedicated to projects that aren't quite ready for prime time."
