By: E&P Staff Lisa Qualls, a carrier for The Oak Ridger in Oak Ridge, Tenn., was nearly done with her route early Monday morning when she noticed something strange as she pulled into the driveway of a subscriber to leave the paper on the porch.
Someone was lying in the driveway at 3:30 in the morning. Qualls quickly recognized the subscriber, Shigemi Simms.
"I saw her lying on the driveway next to her car," Qualls told Oak Ridger reporter Beverly Majors in a story carried by GateHouse News Service. "If I hadn't got out of the car, I wouldn't have seen her."
According to the article by Majors, Qualls called 911 and comforted the woman while awaiting the ambulance. The woman was incoherent, Qualls said.
In followup calls to the hospital, Qualls learned that Simms was admitted to the intensive care unit, and is believed to have suffered a serious diabetic complication.
Simms told the paper she didn't think she did anything extraordinary -- but one time was plenty: "I hope I never run across that again. It was pretty scary."
